During the first session, which will last 1 hour, the reason for the consultation will be addressed and, together with the therapist, you will discuss how the consultations can help you. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and explore any concerns.

In this session, you can assess whether you feel comfortable and confident working with the therapist, and whether the proposed approach makes sense for you and your needs, with no obligation to proceed with future sessions. If you decide to proceed with sessions, a day and time that is feasible for both parties will be agreed upon.

The therapeutic agreement will also be addressed, which includes issues such as confidentiality of sessions, values and cancellation policies.

At the beginning of the therapeutic process, we suggest that sessions are held weekly. This will facilitate the establishment of the therapeutic relationship and set the pace for the rest of the therapy. When this is not possible, or a different schedule is required, the frequency will be discussed and adjusted between you and the therapist.

Each session lasts 55 minutes.

Each process is unique, and each intervention is adapted to each individual, so it is not possible to pre-establish a duration. The duration will depend on the goals of the therapy, the complexity of the case, the chronicity of the symptoms/situation you want to address, and the degree of commitment to the therapy. For some cases 12 sessions may be necessary, for others more or less. The therapist will discuss with you the gains you experience throughout the process, and adjust the sessions accordingly.

Yes, sessions can be held online. To access an online session, you need a computer, tablet, or smartphone and a good internet connection that allows you to connect online. To ensure better audio quality and greater privacy, we recommend using headphones. It is important that the call is made from a quiet, comfortable, and distraction-free space where you can talk to ensure your privacy and confidentiality.

The Order of Portuguese Psychologists recognizes the effectiveness of conducting sessions in an online format, which has been evidenced by several studies that demonstrate that online psychological intervention is as effective as face-to-face intervention in the treatment of various problems (Emmelkamp, 2011; Hilty et al., 2013; Ruwaard et al., 2011). So that the effectiveness is not compromised, it is important to guarantee your privacy during the sessions. Conducting sessions in an online format does not compromise the therapeutic relationship and also has several advantages compared to face-to-face interventions, namely greater accessibility and convenience, no need to travel, and greater flexibility of schedules. The effectiveness of online sessions and their advantages have been reflected in the feedback from various patients who indicate their preference for this format.

In individual therapy, family and close friends should not have the same therapist. This allows the therapist to know each individual separately, in their own narrative, avoiding any interference or bias in the information, and maintaining confidentiality.

Psychologists and psychiatrists often work as a team, as their approaches can complement each other.

The psychiatrist is a doctor, and will be able to respond to your needs in a medical sense, for example by reducing symptoms through the use of medication. The psychologist will look at the individual as a whole and, together with you, develop a therapeutic intervention that provides you with tools to better understand and deal with what you are experiencing, or have experienced in the past.

The sessions follow an integrative approach, informed by Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Therapy, Compassion-Focused Therapy, Acceptance and Commitent Therapy, EMDR and Brainspotting.

Sessions do not have to use this particular approach. According to the available research, Mindfulness is effective in several situations, but its use is not imperative.

Psychological Assessment consists of a diagnosis and understanding of the child/adolescent's problem areas, considering the various factors around them.

In this assessment, in addition to applying psychological tests and tests to the child/adolescent, it is also necessary to collect information from parents and/or technicians who work directly with the child/adolescent.

At the end of the evaluation process, a report is prepared, which in consultation will be explained and provided to parents, with the results and recommendations.
